About this tool
The Tally Counter counts anything you click, tap or press, such as people through a door, laps, stitches, reps or birds, and shows each count in large numbers. Press the big plus button, or click a counter and press Space or Arrow Up, to add the step; the minus button or Arrow Down takes it away, and a count never drops below 0. Add up to 20 named counters to tally several things side by side, with a grand total across all of them. Set the step to count by 2s, 5s or any whole number up to 1,000, give any counter a target to see how many are left and a clear reached state, and turn on an optional click sound. Counts, names and settings are saved in this browser's local storage, so a reload or a closed tab does not lose them. They are never sent to a server, so they also do not sync between devices. Resetting a counter takes a second press to confirm. The counter runs entirely in your browser.
Why use it
The plus and minus buttons are 72 pixels tall, so they are easy to hit on a phone.
Keyboard shortcuts never capture typing, so a counter name or target is not counted by mistake.
Up to 20 named counters with a grand total let you tally several categories at once, such as cars, bikes and pedestrians.
Counts are saved in your browser, so a reload or an accidental tab close does not wipe your tally.
Resets need a second press to confirm, which stops a long count from being lost to one stray tap.
No signup, and nothing you count is sent to a server.
How to use
- Press the large + button to add one, or the − button to take one away.
- Change the Step box to count by a different amount, such as 2, 5 or 10 per press.
- Type a number in a counter's Target box to see how many are left; the card turns green when you reach it.
- Choose Add counter to track more things, give each one a name, and read the grand total below.
- At a keyboard, click a counter and press Space or Arrow Up to add, or Arrow Down to subtract.
- Press Reset and then Confirm to set a counter back to 0, or use Copy totals to paste your counts elsewhere.
When it helps
- Counting people entering a venue, shop or event to stay under a capacity limit.
- Running a traffic or wildlife survey with one counter per category.

Tips
- Name each counter before you start, such as Cars or Bikes, so the copied totals are labeled.
- Set the step to match how you count: 2 for pairs, or 10 when each press stands for a group of ten.
- Holding a key down counts once, so press Space once for each item.
- In a private window or with site data blocked, counting still works, but the tally may not be there after you close the page.
- Use Copy totals to paste the tally into a spreadsheet, a notes app or a message.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I use this online tally counter?⌄
Press + to add the step, which is 1 unless you change it, and − to subtract it. Each counter shows its count in large numbers, and the grand total adds up every counter.
Can I count with the keyboard instead of clicking?⌄
Yes. Click a counter, or anywhere inside the tool, then press Space or Arrow Up to add the step and Arrow Down to subtract it. Keys typed into the name, target or step boxes are never counted, and the shortcuts stop once you click elsewhere on the page.
Will my count still be there if I close the page?⌄
Yes, in the same browser. Counts, names, targets and the step are kept in local storage until you reset them. They are not uploaded, so they do not appear on other devices, and clearing your site data removes them.
Can the count go below zero?⌄
No. The minus button stops at 0, because a tally counts things you have seen. Pressing it at 0 shows a note that the counter is already at 0.
How many counters can I add?⌄
Up to 20. Each has its own name, count and optional target, and the grand total adds them all together. A counter that holds a count asks you to confirm before it is removed.
How does the target work?⌄
Type a whole number in a counter's Target box. The card shows how many are left, for example 100 of 108, 8 to go, and turns green with Target reached once the count meets or passes the target.
Does the counter make a sound?⌄
Only if you turn on Click sound, which is off by default. Then adding plays a short high beep, subtracting a lower one, and reaching a target plays two rising notes.
How do I reset a counter?⌄
Press Reset on the counter, then press Confirm within 4 seconds. Reset all works the same way for every counter at once.
Is there a maximum count?⌄
Each counter stops at 999,999,999,999, far beyond what you can reach by hand.
