About this tool

The Grade Calculator works out your current grade in a class from the scores and weights in your syllabus. Enter each assignment or category, such as homework, quizzes, labs or exams, with the percentage you scored and its weight. It returns the weighted average, the matching letter grade on a common US +/- scale, and how much of the course has been graded so far. If your class counts points instead of percentages, switch to Total points and enter points earned and points possible for each assignment. While less than 100% of the course is graded, set a target grade to see the average you need on the remaining work. For the single-exam version of that question, use the Final Grade Calculator. Everything runs in your browser, and nothing you type is sent anywhere.

Why use it

  • Handles both common grading systems: weighted category percentages and raw point totals.

  • Shows the average you need on the remaining coursework, not just your grade today.

  • Works with partial weights, so you can check your standing mid-term before every category has a score.

  • Reports rows with a missing value or a zero weight instead of silently miscalculating.

  • Runs entirely in your browser with no signup and no data upload.

How to use

  1. Choose Weighted categories if your syllabus gives each category a percentage of the grade, or Total points if every assignment is worth a number of points.
  2. Enter each assignment or category with your score and its weight, or with points earned and points possible. The sample rows show the format; edit or remove them.
  3. Add a row for every graded item and leave work that has not been graded yet out of the list.
  4. Read your current grade, the letter grade and the share of the course graded so far.
  5. In weighted mode, type a target grade to see the average you need on the remaining weight.

When it helps

  • Checking where you stand in a class before a progress report or a parent-teacher meeting.
  • Deciding how much effort the remaining assignments need to reach a B or an A.
  • Comparing the running grade in an online gradebook with the weights printed in your syllabus.
  • Teachers double-checking a weighted average before posting grades.

Examples

Weighted categories mid-semester

Input

Homework 92% (weight 20%), Quizzes 85% (15%), Midterm 78% (25%), target 90%

Expected result

Current grade 84.42% (B), 60% of the course graded, 98.38% needed on the remaining 40%

Points-based class

Input

45/50, 38/40 and 88/100 points

Expected result

171 / 190 points = 90.00% (A-)

Every category graded

Input

Labs 95% (30%), Exams 81% (50%), Participation 100% (20%)

Expected result

Course grade 89.00% (B+)

Tips

  • Copy the weights exactly as printed in your syllabus. If a category drops its lowest score, enter the category average after the drop.
  • When your teacher grades on points, use Total points: averaging each assignment's percentage instead would give small quizzes the same pull as a 100-point exam.
  • Extra credit can push a category above 100%, so enter the real percentage rather than capping it.
  • Letter cut-offs vary between schools. Check whether yours uses 90/80/70/60 or a +/- scale with 93, 90 and 87 cut-offs.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I calculate my grade with weighted categories?
Multiply each category score by its weight, add the results and divide by the total weight. For example, 92% homework at 20%, 85% quizzes at 15% and 78% on a midterm worth 25% give (92×20 + 85×15 + 78×25) ÷ 60 = 84.42%.
What if my weights don't add up to 100% yet?
That is normal mid-semester. The calculator averages over the weight graded so far, which is how most gradebooks show a running grade, and uses the remaining weight to work out what you need for a target grade.
What is the difference between weighted and points-based grading?
In weighted grading each category is worth a fixed share of the final grade, however many points it contains. In points-based grading every point counts the same, so a 100-point exam matters ten times as much as a 10-point quiz.
What grade do I need on the rest of my assignments?
Enter a target grade in weighted mode. The tool computes (target × 100 − weighted points earned) ÷ remaining weight, which is the average you need across everything not yet graded.
Which letter grade scale does the calculator use?
A common US +/- scale: 97 and above A+, 93 A, 90 A-, 87 B+, 83 B, 80 B-, 77 C+, 73 C, 70 C-, 67 D+, 63 D, 60 D-, and below 60 F. Your school's scale may differ.
Can I enter letter grades instead of percentages?
Not directly. Convert each letter to the percentage your teacher uses first, or use the GPA Calculator if you want a grade point average from letter grades and credit hours.
Is my information saved or uploaded?
No. The calculation happens in your browser, and nothing is stored or sent to a server.
