About this tool
The Final Grade Calculator answers the question students ask before exam week: what do I need on the final? Enter your current grade, how much the final is worth and the grade you want, and it returns the minimum final exam score along with the best grade you can still reach with a perfect final. It also lists the score needed for an A, B, C and D on the common 90/80/70/60 scale, and a what-if box shows the course grade any final exam score would give you. The math is the weighted-average formula gradebooks use: required score = (target − current × (1 − weight)) ÷ weight. If your current grade comes from several categories, work it out first with the Grade Calculator. The calculator runs in your browser, and nothing is uploaded.
Why use it
Gives the exact minimum final exam score instead of a guess.
Shows the score needed for every letter grade at once.
Tells you when a target is out of reach or already secured, so you can plan study time across classes.
The what-if box shows how any exam score changes your course grade.
Instant and private: it runs in your browser with no signup.
How to use
- Enter your current grade in the class before the final, as a percentage.
- Enter the final exam weight: the percentage of the course grade the final is worth, from your syllabus.
- Enter the grade you want to finish with.
- Read the score you need on the final and the best grade still possible.
- Check the letter cards for the minimum score for an A, B, C or D, and type a score under What if I score to see the resulting course grade.
When it helps
- Planning study time across several finals by seeing which classes sit close to a grade boundary.
- Checking whether you can still pass a class before the final exam.
- Deciding whether an optional final is worth taking when your school lets you skip it.
- Estimating your course grade after the exam, before the official grade is posted.
Examples
InputCurrent grade 84%, final worth 25%, want 85%
Expected resultYou need 88% on the final
InputCurrent grade 84%, final worth 25%, want 90%
Expected resultYou would need 108%; the best possible grade is 88%
InputCurrent grade 72%, final worth 40%, want 80%
Expected resultYou need 92% on the final
Tips
- Use your grade before the final, not a gradebook figure that already counts the final as a zero.
- If the final replaces your lowest exam or has other special rules, the simple formula does not apply; ask your teacher how it is counted.
- Your course grade moves by the final's weight times the gap between your exam score and your current grade, so a heavier final deserves more of your study time.
- If your school rounds 89.5% up to an A-, enter 89.5 as the grade you want.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I calculate what I need on my final?⌄
Use required = (target − current × (1 − w)) ÷ w, where w is the final's weight as a decimal. With an 84% current grade, a final worth 25% and an 85% target: (85 − 84 × 0.75) ÷ 0.25 = 88%.
What if the calculator says the grade is not possible?⌄
It means even 100% on the final cannot lift your grade to the target. The best possible grade card shows the highest grade you can still reach; only extra credit or a curve can go beyond it.
What does 'Already secured' mean?⌄
Your current grade is high enough that you would still reach that letter with 0% on the final. You still need to sit the exam if your school requires it.
What is the final exam weight?⌄
It is the percentage of your course grade the final is worth, listed in your syllabus. A final worth 25% counts for a quarter of the course grade, and everything before it counts for the other 75%.
Does this work if my final is a project or paper?⌄
Yes. Any last assessment with a fixed weight works the same way: enter its weight as the final exam weight.
How much can my final exam change my grade?⌄
Your course grade changes by the final's weight times the gap between your final score and your current grade. On a final worth 30%, scoring 20 points above your current grade raises your course grade by 6 points.
Which letter grade cut-offs are used?⌄
The letter cards use 90% for an A, 80% for a B, 70% for a C and 60% for a D. If your school uses different cut-offs, type the exact percentage in the Grade you want field.
