About this tool

The Spacebar Counter counts how many times you press the space bar and turns it into a speed score. Choose a 5, 10, 30 or 60 second test and the timer starts on your first press; when it ends you get your total presses and your presses per second, which is presses divided by seconds. Free mode has no timer: it counts every press until you choose Stop, then divides by the time since your first press. Each press counts once, because the counter ignores the repeats a keyboard sends while a key is held down. While the test box is focused or a test is running, Space counts instead of scrolling the page, and Space typed into a text box is never counted. On phones and tablets, tap the box instead: each tap counts as one press, while a mouse click only gives the box focus. Your best score for each mode is saved in this browser. The counter runs entirely in your browser and sends nothing to a server.

Why use it

  • Holding the space bar down counts once, so only real presses score.

  • Space does not scroll the page while the test box is focused or a test is running.

  • Four timed modes plus a free mode with no time limit.

  • Works on phones and tablets: tap the box when there is no space bar.

  • Your best score for each mode is kept in this browser to beat next time.

How to use

  1. Pick a mode: 5, 10, 30 or 60 seconds, or Free for a count with no time limit.
  2. Make sure the large box has focus; choosing a mode does this, or click the box once.
  3. Press the space bar as fast as you can. The timer starts with your first press.
  4. Watch your presses, the time and your presses per second update as you go.
  5. When time is up, or after you press Stop in free mode, read your total and rate and see whether you set a new best.
  6. Press Restart to go again.

When it helps

  • Checking that a sticky or repaired space bar registers every press, using free mode.
  • Warming up for games where you press Space to jump or act quickly.
  • A quick speed challenge between friends, classmates or a stream audience.
  • Comparing a mechanical keyboard with a laptop keyboard on the same test length.

Examples

10-second test

Input

45 presses in the 10-second test

Expected result

4.50 presses per second

5-second test

Input

38 presses in the 5-second test

Expected result

7.60 presses per second

Free mode

Input

120 presses, Stop pressed 20 seconds after the first press

Expected result

6.00 presses per second over 20.00 seconds

Tips

  • To check a keyboard, use free mode, press Space exactly 20 times and confirm the count reads 20.
  • If Space scrolls the page instead of counting, click the test box first so it has focus.
  • Compare scores within one mode; a 60-second score is not comparable with a 5-second burst.
  • On a phone, try alternating two thumbs on the box: every tap counts as one press.

Frequently Asked Questions

How does the spacebar counter work?
It counts each Space key press while the test box has focus, starting the timer on your first press. At the end it divides your presses by the test length, so 45 presses in 10 seconds is 4.50 presses per second.
Does holding the space bar down count?
A held key counts once. Keyboards repeat a held key automatically, and the counter ignores those repeats, so only separate presses add to your score.
Why does the page scroll when I press Space?
Space scrolls a web page unless something on it uses the key. The counter takes over Space only while its box has focus or a test is running, so click the box once and the page stays still.
Can I use the spacebar counter on a phone or tablet?
Yes. Without a keyboard, tap the large box: each tap counts as one press. A connected keyboard's space bar works too.
What is free mode?
Free mode has no time limit. It counts presses until you press Stop, then shows the total and the rate over the time since your first press, measured to hundredths of a second.
Are my best scores saved?
Yes. The highest press count for each mode is saved in this browser's local storage. Nothing is uploaded, and Clear best scores removes them.
Does a mouse click on the box count as a press?
No. A mouse click only gives the box focus so the space bar works. Taps on a touchscreen do count, because they stand in for the space bar on devices without one.
