About this tool

AVIF images are compact, but editing apps, slide software and some websites still cannot read them. This AVIF to PNG converter decodes each .avif file in your browser and saves it as a PNG, the lossless format that nearly every program opens. PNG keeps the decoded pixels exactly, including the alpha channel, so logos, stickers and cut-outs stay transparent. Each converted file is shown over a checkerboard so you can see the transparent areas, with its dimensions and the size before and after. Convert one image or many at once, then download the PNGs individually or as a ZIP. PNG files are usually much larger than AVIF because PNG does not discard detail. Decoding needs a browser with AVIF support (Chrome 85+, Firefox 93+ or Safari 16+). Your files are processed on your device and never uploaded.

Tips

  • For photos without transparency, AVIF to JPG gives much smaller files.
  • Run large PNGs through the Image Compressor if you need to shrink them afterwards.
  • Animated AVIF files convert as a single still image.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is AVIF to PNG lossless?
The PNG stores the pixels exactly as your browser decoded them, so no further quality is lost. It cannot restore detail that AVIF compression already removed.
Does PNG keep AVIF transparency?
Yes. PNG supports a full alpha channel, so transparent and semi-transparent pixels are kept. The preview uses a checkerboard background so you can see them.
Why is the PNG so much bigger than the AVIF?
AVIF uses lossy compression that is very efficient, while PNG is lossless. The same picture as PNG often takes several times more space, especially for photos.
Are my files uploaded anywhere?
No. Conversion runs in your browser tab. Only the ZIP library is fetched from a CDN when you choose Download all.
Which browsers can convert AVIF?
Any browser that can display AVIF: Chrome 85 or later, Firefox 93 or later and Safari 16 or later. Older browsers report the file as undecodable.
Should I choose PNG or JPG?
Choose PNG for graphics, screenshots, text and anything with transparency. Choose JPG for photos when a smaller file matters more than transparency.
