About this tool

Square footage is the area of a flat surface measured in square feet, the figure you need when buying flooring, paint, sod, carpet or tile, or when comparing room and home sizes. This square foot calculator works out the area of a rectangle or square (length × width), a circle (from its diameter) or a triangle (base × height ÷ 2). Measure in feet, inches, yards, meters or centimeters and the result is converted to square feet, square yards, square meters, square inches and acres. Enter a price per square foot to estimate the cost. For an L-shaped room or a whole floor, split the space into simple shapes and press Add to total after each one; the running list shows every area with a remove button, the combined square feet and square meters, and the total cost. Everything updates as you type and runs in your browser.

Why use it

  • Mixed units handled: measure in inches, feet, yards, meters or centimeters and get square feet directly.

  • Several shapes: rectangles, circles and triangles cover most rooms, patios and garden beds.

  • Running total: add each section of an L-shaped room or a whole house and see the combined area.

  • Cost estimate from a price per square foot, for flooring, paint or turf quotes.

  • Five result units at once: square feet, square yards, square meters, square inches and acres.

How to use

  1. Choose the shape (rectangle, circle or triangle) and the unit you measured in.
  2. Enter the length and width, the diameter, or the base and height.
  3. Optionally enter a price per square foot to see the estimated cost.
  4. For several rooms or an irregular space, press Add to total after each section and read the combined figure.

When it helps

  • Ordering flooring, carpet, tile or laminate for one or more rooms.
  • Comparing an apartment or house listing's stated square footage with your own measurements.
  • Pricing sod, artificial grass or paving for a yard or patio.
  • Working out the area of a circular rug, table or garden bed.

Examples

Rectangular room

Input

Rectangle 12 ft × 15 ft

Expected result

180 sq ft = 20 sq yd = 16.72 m²

L-shaped room with cost

Input

12 × 15 ft + 10 × 12 ft, price 4.50 per sq ft

Expected result

Total 300 sq ft; estimated cost 1,350.00

Round rug

Input

Circle, diameter 10 ft

Expected result

78.54 sq ft = 7.3 m²

Tips

  • Measure each wall at floor level and round up to the nearest inch.
  • For closets and alcoves, add them as separate rectangles to the running total.
  • Subtract fixed features such as kitchen islands only if the material will not go under them.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do you calculate square footage?
For a rectangle, multiply the length by the width in feet. A room 12 ft by 15 ft is 12 × 15 = 180 square feet. For other shapes use the matching area formula, then convert the result to square feet.
How do I measure an L-shaped room?
Split it into two rectangles, measure each one, and press Add to total after entering each. The calculator adds the areas together, for example 180 + 120 = 300 sq ft.
How do I convert inches to square feet?
Choose inches as the unit and enter your measurements; the calculator divides by 144 for you. A space 144 in by 120 in is 17,280 square inches, which is 120 square feet.
How many square feet are in a square yard and a square meter?
One square yard is 9 square feet. One square meter is about 10.764 square feet (one square foot is exactly 0.09290304 m²).
How is the area of a circle calculated?
Area = π × (diameter ÷ 2)². A circle 10 ft across covers about 78.54 square feet.
Should I add extra for waste?
Most flooring and tile jobs need about 5 to 10 percent extra for cuts and breakage, and more for diagonal layouts. This calculator gives the exact area, so add the margin your installer or the product instructions recommend.
Does the cost estimate include a currency?
No. The cost is the area multiplied by your price per square foot, so it is in whatever currency you entered the price in.
