About this tool
Cubic feet measure volume: how much space a box, room, freezer, moving truck or planter holds. This cubic feet calculator handles a rectangular box or room (length × width × height) and a cylinder such as a round tank, tube or column (π × radius² × height, entered as a diameter). Measure in inches, feet, yards, meters or centimeters; every dimension is converted to feet before multiplying, so you never have to divide by 1,728 yourself. Set a quantity to total several identical boxes. The result is shown in cubic feet along with cubic inches, cubic yards, cubic meters, liters and US gallons, and a note shows the formula used. Results update as you type and nothing leaves your browser.
Why use it
Any measuring unit: inches, feet, yards, meters or centimeters, all converted to cubic feet.
Boxes and cylinders: covers moving boxes, rooms, aquariums, tanks and round planters.
Six volume units at once, including liters and US gallons for liquids.
Quantity multiplier for stacks of identical boxes or containers.
How to use
- Choose Box or Cylinder and the unit you measured in.
- Enter the length, width and height, or for a cylinder the diameter and height.
- Set the quantity if you have several identical items.
- Read the volume in cubic feet and the other units.
When it helps
- Estimating how many cubic feet your boxes will take up in a moving truck or storage unit.
- Checking the capacity of a freezer, shipping crate or cabinet.
- Working out the volume of a room for heating, cooling or air purifier sizing.
- Finding how much soil a round planter or raised bed needs.
Examples
Expected result3 ft³ = 5,184 in³ = 84.95 liters
Expected result960 ft³ = 35.5556 yd³ = 27.1842 m³
InputCylinder, diameter 2 ft, height 4 ft
Expected result12.566 ft³ = 94 US gallons
Tips
- Measure the inside of a container if you need its capacity, and the outside if you need the space it occupies.
- For bulk materials such as mulch or gravel, use the cubic yard or gravel calculator, which also take depth in inches.
- Round each measurement up slightly when packing, since boxes rarely fit perfectly.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do you calculate cubic feet?⌄
Multiply length × width × height with all three measured in feet. A room 12 ft × 10 ft × 8 ft is 960 cubic feet.
How do I calculate cubic feet from inches?⌄
Multiply the three measurements in inches and divide by 1,728, because one cubic foot is 12 × 12 × 12 cubic inches. A 24 × 18 × 12 inch box is 5,184 cubic inches, or 3 cubic feet. Choosing inches as the unit does this for you.
How do I find the cubic feet of a cylinder?⌄
Volume = π × (diameter ÷ 2)² × height. A cylinder 2 ft across and 4 ft tall holds about 12.57 cubic feet.
How many gallons are in a cubic foot?⌄
One cubic foot holds about 7.48 US gallons, or about 28.32 liters.
How many cubic feet are in a cubic yard?⌄
There are 27 cubic feet in a cubic yard, because a yard is 3 feet and 3 × 3 × 3 = 27.
Does it handle odd shapes?⌄
It calculates boxes and cylinders. For an irregular space, split it into boxes, calculate each one, and add the results.
