About this tool

A word cloud shows the words in a piece of text sized by how often they appear, so the main themes stand out at a glance. Paste any text into this word cloud generator and it counts every word, ignoring case and pure numbers, and draws the most frequent ones on a 1200 × 720 canvas. Common English words such as the, and and with are skipped by default, and you can exclude any other words in a comma-separated list. Choose the maximum number of words (25 to 150), the minimum word length, a colour palette, a dark, white or transparent background, the font, and whether some words run vertically. Words are placed along a spiral from the centre without overlapping; if a word cannot fit, the status line says how many were placed. Press Shuffle layout for a different arrangement and Download PNG to save the image. A list of the most frequent words with their counts appears below. Your text stays in your browser.

Tips

  • Remove names or boilerplate that appear everywhere so the real themes show up.
  • Fewer words (25 or 50) give a bolder, more readable cloud for slides.
  • A minimum length of 4 removes many short filler words that the common-word list misses.

Frequently Asked Questions

How does the word cloud decide word size?
Each word is counted, and font size is scaled between a minimum and maximum by the square root of its frequency, so the most common word is largest and rare words are smallest.
Which words are skipped?
With Skip common English words on, about 140 frequent words such as the, and, with, is and you are ignored. Pure numbers are always ignored. Add any other words to the exclude box, separated by commas.
Why are some words missing from the cloud?
If a word cannot be placed without overlapping others, it is left out and the status line reports how many words were placed. Lower the maximum word count or switch to mixed direction to fit more.
Can I download the word cloud?
Yes. Download PNG saves a 1200 × 720 image. Choose the Transparent background if you want to place it over another design.
Are capital letters treated separately?
No. Text is lower-cased before counting, so Cloud and cloud count as the same word. Possessive 's endings are removed, so cat's counts as cat.
Does it work with other languages?
Words in any alphabet, including accented letters, are counted. The common-word filter only covers English, so use the exclude box for other languages. Languages written without spaces between words are not split into words.
Is my text uploaded?
No. Counting and drawing happen in your browser and nothing is sent to a server.
