About this tool

Webcam Recorder lets you record video from your camera directly in the browser. Choose your resolution (480p, 720p, or 1080p), enable mirror mode for a natural selfie view, and start recording with one click. Audio is captured from your microphone simultaneously. The recording is saved as a WebM file — nothing is uploaded to any server.

Why use it

  • No software or account required

  • Supports HD recording up to 1080p

  • Live mirror preview for natural selfie view

  • Audio + video captured simultaneously

  • Privacy-first: stays in your browser

  • On-screen timer shows how long the current take has been running.

How to use

  1. Allow camera and microphone access when prompted
  2. Choose resolution (720p recommended)
  3. Toggle mirror mode if needed
  4. Click 'Record' and perform your recording
  5. Click 'Stop' to finish
  6. Preview and download the WebM video
  7. Choose a resolution (720p recommended for most uses)

Expected result

WebM around 30 MB you can drop into Slack, Loom replacement, or Discord

Camera/mic test

Input

480p, 10-second take to check camera position and mic levels

Expected result

Small (~2 MB) WebM you can preview and discard before a real recording

Tips

  • 720p is the sweet spot for most webcams — it matches typical sensor quality and produces small files.
  • For testimonials or sales videos, position your light source in front of you (window or lamp), not behind, to avoid silhouette effects.
  • Mute notifications before recording — they can interrupt audio capture or distract from the take.
  • Test your microphone level in OS sound settings before starting; this tool doesn't show a live VU meter.
  • There is no pause button — keep takes short and record a fresh clip for each segment.
  • If the recording looks too dark, increase your room lighting rather than tweaking webcam software — the encoder respects the captured frames as-is.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is my video uploaded anywhere?
No. It stays in your browser using MediaRecorder API and is only downloaded to your device when you click Download.
What formats are supported?
The output is WebM. You can convert it to MP4 with the Video Resize & Converter tool.
Why do I need to grant camera permission?
The browser requires explicit permission to access your camera and microphone for privacy reasons. This is a browser security feature, not our requirement.
Can I record audio only?
This tool records video + audio together. For audio-only, use a dedicated audio recording tool.
What resolution should I choose?
720p is a good balance of quality and file size. Use 1080p only if you need high-quality output.
Why is the preview mirrored?
Mirroring is enabled by default because it looks more natural when you're facing the camera (like a mirror). The recorded video is not mirrored.
Is there a recording time limit?
No enforced limit, but long recordings create large files stored in browser memory.

Glossary

MediaRecorder API
Browser API that encodes a live MediaStream (camera + microphone) into a downloadable Blob.
getUserMedia
Browser API that prompts the user to share a webcam and/or microphone as a MediaStream.
VP9
Open video codec used inside WebM. Produces smaller files than H.264 at similar visual quality.
Opus
Open audio codec used inside WebM. Standard for browser-side audio capture and playback.
Container format
The file wrapper. WebM holds VP9 + Opus; MP4 holds H.264 + AAC. This tool outputs WebM.
Frame rate (FPS)
Frames per second the camera delivers. 30 fps is standard for webcams; some support 60 fps.
Bitrate
Bits per second of encoded video/audio. Picked automatically by the browser based on resolution.
Mirror mode
A purely cosmetic horizontal flip on the live preview so it matches the user's expectations of a mirror; the recorded file is not flipped.
