About this tool
Long division breaks a division into a repeating cycle: divide, multiply, subtract and bring down the next digit. This long division calculator shows that working for any two whole numbers. Enter the dividend and the divisor and it draws the classic bracket layout, with the quotient above the dividend and each subtraction below, then lists every step in words, such as "4 goes into 17 four times. 4 × 4 = 16, and 17 − 16 = 1. Bring down the next digit to make 18." The answer is given as a quotient and remainder, as a mixed number, and with a check line showing quotient × divisor + remainder = dividend. Choose a number of decimal places (1 to 10) to keep dividing past the decimal point; the decimal answer is truncated, not rounded, and marked when it is not exact. Dividends can have up to 30 digits and divisors up to 18, and exact integer arithmetic is used throughout.
Why use it
Shows the working twice: a classic long division layout and a plain-English step for every digit.
Remainder or decimals: stop at a whole-number remainder or continue to up to 10 decimal places.
Self-checking: every answer includes quotient × divisor + remainder = dividend.
Large numbers stay exact, with dividends of up to 30 digits.
Free and private: the calculation runs entirely in your browser.
How to use
- Enter the dividend (the number being divided) and the divisor (the number you divide by).
- Choose whether to show a remainder or continue to a number of decimal places.
- Read the quotient, remainder and mixed-number answer, plus the check line.
- Follow the long division layout and the numbered steps to see how each digit of the answer was found.
When it helps
- Checking long division homework and finding the exact step where a mistake crept in.
- Helping a child practise the divide, multiply, subtract, bring down routine.
- Converting a fraction such as 22/7 into a decimal to a set number of places.
- Splitting a total evenly and seeing what is left over.
Examples
01Three-digit by one-digit
Expected result144 R 2 (check: 144 × 4 + 2 = 578)
Input22 ÷ 7 to 3 decimal places
Expected result≈ 3.142 (truncated); 3 R 1
Tips
- Estimate first: 578 ÷ 4 should be a little under 150, which makes errors easy to spot.
- If a subtraction ever gives a number larger than the divisor, the quotient digit above it was too small.
- Use the GCF calculator to simplify the remainder fraction in a mixed number.
Frequently Asked Questions
What are the steps of long division?⌄
Divide, multiply, subtract and bring down. Find how many times the divisor goes into the current number, write that digit in the quotient, multiply it by the divisor, subtract, then bring down the next digit and repeat until no digits remain.
What is the remainder?⌄
The amount left over after dividing as many whole times as possible. 578 ÷ 4 = 144 remainder 2, because 144 × 4 = 576 and 578 − 576 = 2.
How do I get a decimal answer instead of a remainder?⌄
Choose a number of decimal places. The calculator places a decimal point after the dividend and brings down zeros, continuing the same steps. 22 ÷ 7 to 3 places gives 3.142.
Is the decimal answer rounded?⌄
No, it is truncated: the calculator stops after the chosen number of places, as you would when doing long division by hand. When the division is not exact the answer is shown with ≈ and labelled truncated.
Can I divide decimals or negative numbers?⌄
Only whole numbers of zero or more are accepted, and the divisor must be at least 1. To divide decimals, multiply both numbers by the same power of ten to remove the decimal points first; the quotient stays the same.
How do I write the answer as a mixed number?⌄
Put the remainder over the divisor next to the quotient. 578 ÷ 4 is 144 2/4, which simplifies to 144 1/2. The calculator shows the unsimplified mixed number.
